The Third Doctor met them twice, but on both occasions, the enemy was another force on Peladon, not the warriors. It's slightly picky, I know, but that's the reason I said he battled them... As for the iconic status of the Daleks - well established before the end of that particular story. Everybody was running around the school playground with one arm held out straight shouting "Exterminate!" Over the years I quite forgot the cavemen and thought the series went straight from "An Unearthly Child " to "The Daleks". If you mean Captain Rum in Blackadder II, that was Tom Baker.

I think the Daleks were more or less instantaneous, weren't they? As I think Andy covered ably in his last post, the way they first appeared was tremendous - almost the equivalent of today's event TV (maybe?). They did kind of take off on their own... and they were obviously a good merchandising design.
